How much do drums cost? Basic sets start at around £150 for a full size starter kit (kits
that come with everything), up to just about anything. Mid range kits are around
£500-£800
Are starter kits any good? Obviously you get what you pay for, but starter kits aren't a
bad way to begin and learn on. You can always upgrade and improve at a later date
without losing too much. Electronic kits are always another possibility for learning on.
Check out the second hand market.
How long does it take to get good? Different people learn at different rates but with
dedication and regular practise you could be up to performance level between 1-2 years.
It is vital that you practice as much as possible. If you enjoy playing, you should want to
practice even if its on a pad whilst watching TV.
Are lessons available at my home? Not at present due to high demand of lesson slots
What do exams entail? Exams are beneficial in many ways, and carry considerable
weight. Exam consists of 1 or 2 Rudimental studies, 2 pieces (1 with a backing track), and
2 further tests from Aural, Sight reading or Improvisation
What real value do exams have? Grade 5 considered GCSE C, Grade 8 an A-Level.
Also proves to en employer or band that you are dedicated and are willing to learn and
improve. Some institutions require a minimum level.
What is the point of learning multiple styles? Learning many styles obviously helps
you to be versatile and not think in such an obvious way. It can greatly improve your 'feel'
in groove playing, solos, fills etc
What is a drum clinic? Drum clinics are about creating a drum community.A chance to
watch and meet experienced performers and tap into their approach. Examples are
questions and answers, solos, playing along to tracks, exercises broken down.
