The Moeller technique/whipping technique
This technique is most famously referred to by the technique developed by Sanford
Moeller, although it was arguably invented prior to that. It is an extremely useful
technique that I recommend to anyone who has been playing a while. Many top names
have started employing it over the fast 10 years or so.
Its main function in life is to allow greater ease and speed for playing accented patterns.
However its usefulness can be extended to incorporate in all of our playing for a more
natural and relaxed approach.
I believe this can be used in either direction i.e. tap first or accent first.
Firstly make sure your grip is good- controlled but relaxed.
Position yourself above the drum and move your forearm up, without moving it
backwards and point your stick/wrist down at the same time. This is a slow motion and
exaggerated movement so don't worry if it feels a little uncomfortable. You should have
played a light note and ending up a reverse s or snake position. This first movement is
often referred to as the movement as if you are about to crack a whip. We've used the
prepare to whip motion to play a beat aswell.
The second movement is the accent. Bring the forearm back down and whip the stick
down with your wrist. Make sure as always you allow the stick to respond and return to
its start position. Don't leave the stick on the drum at any time. We only ever leave the
stick down for muted sounds which are rarely used on drumkit.
